Reflections upon my dying Grandma

This life that we live in these earthen vessels is one of futility, of decay, of failure. (Romans 8:20)

Whenever we succeed do you know who waits at the end? Death.

No matter how well we do that in which we most want to succeed we are going to fail; we are going to die.

My Grandma Helen Jack is dying. She is laid upon a bed in hospital.

She can barely blink! That is to say she intends to blink and she cannot; she fails at blinking.

She has bed-sores because she cannot move. She fails to shift herself when she becomes uncomfortable.

She couldn’t even shit herself!

But all this surprisingly gives me hope! “How can this be?” I hear you exclaim.

Well it is given to men once to die then the judgement. (Hebrews 9:27)

How can this give me hope?

He who dies is made free from sin! (Romans 6:7)

Do you know what else gives me hope? The fact that to sin means to fail. To sin means to miss the mark.

My grandma is in that bed failing more than she has ever failed before but guess what?

Where sin (that is failing) abounds grace super abounds!!! (Romans 5:20)

See all roads lead to Rome just as sure as every action leads to glory.

I know this is of God because it is happening and because I know God I know it is for our benefit. It is for my benefit.

It is for my Grandma’s, my Dad’s, my uncles’, siblings and cousins benefit. It is even for your benefit.

Yes even you who I do not know it is for your benefit. Why?

Don’t you know that unless a seed dies it bears no fruit? (1 Corinthians 15:36) Don’t you know that this body of flesh and blood will in no rise inherit the reign of the heavens!? (1 Corinthians 15:50)

Don’t you know that it is a good and fitting end for this vessel of wrath made for destruction to be destroyed so that the new man may be born. So that the vessels of grace for Glory may shine forth. (Romans 9: 22 – 23)

It is expedient that this earthen vessel be shattered so that this treasure we have may shine forth. (2 Corinthians 4:7 also check out Judges 7 for a foreshadowing of the revelation of the sons of God (Romans 8:19))

So yes! Halleluiah and praise Him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will (Ephesians 1:11) my Grandma is dying and do you know what?

The end of a matter is better than its beginning (Ecclesiastes 7:8)

Praise the father of all creation because He humiliates us so as to show us His glorious strength and majesty when He lifts us up higher – alongside Jesus – than all powers and principalities (Ephesians 1:22 – 23)
